Vom 9. bis zum 29. Juni bin ich auf dem South West Coast Path um einen Teil von Cornwall herum gelaufen, angefangen in St. Ives an der nördlichen Küste, um Land’s End an der äußersten Westspitze der britischen Insel herum und Richtung Osten bis nach Plymouth. Der South West Coast Path ist insgesamt viel länger, 1014 km insgesamt, und reicht von Minehead am Rand von Exmoor im Norden bis nach Poole in Dorset. Davon bin ich in sehr gemütlichem Tempo 300 km gelaufen und habe mir Zeit genommen, diesen Weg, die Ausblicke, die Dörfer, die Luft und die wunderbare Landschaft zu genießen.
From June 9-29 I walked around a part of Cornwall on the South West Coast Path, beginning at St. Ives on the northern coast, around Land’s End at the westernmost tip of England and following the coastline to the East until Plymouth. The whole South West Coast Path is over 600 miles long, reaching from Minehead near Exmoor in the North to Poole in Dorset. I walked about 180 miles, taking my time to enjoy the views, the places, the air and the wonderful land- and seascapes.

Die erste Frage nach einem Urlaub nach “War’s schön?” ist ja immer: “Wie war das Hotel?” Mein Hotel trage ich mit mir herum, manchmal freue ich mich aber auch auf vier Wände und ein Bett. Es gibt an einigen Orten an diesem Weg sehr nette Rucksackunterkünfte und Jugendherbergen.
After a holiday the first question (after having settled that it was a nice holiday) usually is: “How was your hotel?” I carry my hotel with me on my back, but sometimes I enjoy four walls and a bed. There are a couple of nice backpackers’ hostels along the way as well as youth hostels.
Orte – Places
Der Weg folgt der Küste und führt in ein altes Fischerdörfchen nach dem anderen. Und in den meisten der Dörfer und Städtchen fahren auch heute noch die Fischer aus, wenn sie auch zum Teil Touristen mitnehmen. Die Zeit scheint irgendwann in den fünfziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts stehengeblieben zu sein, selbst wenn die meisten Unterkünfte mit kostenlosem W-LAN-Zugang werben. Autos passen nicht überall durch die Gassen, in Helford Passage und Polperro zum Beispiel werden die Autofahrer auf den letzten Parkplatz und fehlende Wendemöglichkeiten schon bei der Ortseinfahrt hingewiesen.
The Path follows the coastline and leads to one old fishing village after the other. In most of them the fishermen are still fishing today, even if they take tourists to mackerel watching etc. Time seems to have stopped around the fifties, even when most hotels and B&Bs are advertising free WiFi access. In some places the streets are too narrow for cars. In Helford Passge and Polperro for instance drivers are warned that there is no space to turn around and they have to leave their car on the last parking lot at the entrance of the village.
Der Weg – The Path
An der Küste entlang – das hört sich schön an, immer am Strand, zwischendurch mal eine Düne, jedenfalls bequemes Laufen. Allerdings haben wir es in Cornwall mit einer Felsküste zu tun. Das heißt, der Weg kreuzt Bachtäler und Senken zwischen den Felsrücken, zum Teil turnt man dabei über Steine und Felsen. Es geht ständig auf und ab, gleichbleibende Höhe ist die Ausnahme, ein ebener Untergrund ein Anlass zur Freude. Ich war froh, daß ich überwiegend in Richtung Osten unterwegs war, so hatte ich den Wind im Rücken. Aber die Mühe lohnt sich. Die Ausblicke verschlagen einem immer wieder den Atem, es gibt hunderttausend Dinge am Wegrand zu entdecken, und die Strände sind bei schönem Wetter eine willkommene Gelegenheit, die Füße abzukühlen.
Walking along the coast sounds nice, like walking along a beach, perhaps a dune for a change, anyway: it sounds comfortable. But in Cornwall the coastline consists of cliffs. The path crosses valleys and drops - often steeply - between the higher ridges and often goes over stones and rocks. It is a constant up and down, an even stretch of path is the exception and smooth ground to tread on is a reason to rejoice. I was glad that I walked in the Eastern direction and had the wind in my back. But it is worth the effort! The views are breathtaking, there are thousands of little things to be seen along the way, and in good weather the beaches offer a good opportunity to cool the feet.
